Severance was named best streaming drama series and Ted Lasso was named best streaming comedy series at the Hollywood Critics Association’s HCA TV Awards on Sunday. Dopesick was named best streaming limited or anthology series.

Cameron Esposito stepped in to host the ceremony after Notaro tested positive for COVID-19, Esposito told the audience. Esposito noted that she got the last-minute call over the weekend and flew to Los Angeles earlier Sunday to host the show, where awards were handed out in the streaming categories.

“I can’t believe you were able to squeeze these awards into two days,” Esposito joked, noting that the streaming shows are the only TV programs she actually watches, before noting she had written her monologue in one hour. (Esposito goes by both she/her and they/them pronouns.)

Overall, Severance was the night’s big winner with five wins, followed by Dopesick with four and Hacks with three.

Dopesick star Michael Keaton was named best actor in a streaming limited or anthology series or movie, joking he was late for the ceremony because he was cleaning out his basement and found some “top-secret nuclear shit” in there and jokingly invited the audience to his house after the show.

Only Murders in the Building star Martin Short accepted his award for best actor in a comedy in a prerecorded speech, saying he was excited to accept “because the Botox is fresh.” He also gave a shoutout to his fellow stars Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, the latter of whom he noted can juggle and play the banjo and yet is somehow still famous.

Best actor in a drama winner Lee Jung-jae of Squid Game also accepted via prerecorded video, saying he felt lucky to be a part of the show, which “has opened a new chapter in my acting career.” He added that he is “more determined to do projects that are entertaining…and moving.”

Among the other winners were Norm Macdonald, who won the award for best comedy of standup special posthumously. The comedian died last year at age 61 after a long battle with cancer.

Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls was named best streaming reality show or competition series.

The Kids in the Hall was named best streaming variety sketch series, talk series or special. Dave Foley accepted the award, thanking Lorne Michaels “for plucking us from obscurity and raising us all up to semi-obscurity.” He also thanked “Amazon, for ruining the planet, but producing some great television while they’re at it.”

The Dropout star Amanda Seyfried accepted the award for best actress in a streaming limited or anthology series or movie via a prerecorded acceptance speech, noting she had a 6:30 a.m. call time in New York and thus was unable to accept in person.

Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso was named best supporting actor in a comedy, and said in his speech that “the secret [to winning the award] is make sure most of your scenes are with Juno Temple.”

In her speech, best supporting actress in a comedy winner Hannah Einbinder of Hacks made a plea: “We cannot call ourselves a liberal institution if the working-class members of the institution are not treated equally and fairly, so I hope anyone in this room with the power to advocate for crews on an individual basis continue to prioritize that.”

As We See It was honored with the Spotlight Award, while Star Trek: Strange New World was given the Legacy Award, with a tribute to Nichelle Nichols, the original series star who died last month at age 89.

The organization began its two-night event at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday in a ceremony hosted by The Daily Show’s Dulcé Sloan, featuring the broadcast and cable categories. HBO’s White Lotus led all shows with five wins, including for best limited series.
